Inspired by the eponymous character in Shakespeare’s The Tempest with his prized books of magic, Prospero is a haven for books and precious objects. Handcrafted in solid American Black Walnut with prehistoric (5,300 year old) English Bog Oak inlay on it’s leading upright edges, it combines pared-down contemporary styling with functionality, and has the capacity to display a fine book collection as well as objets d’art.
Using a considerable amount of hand-selected solid timber, it is a substantial piece that shows off the rarely celebrated yet beautiful endgrain of walnut in contrast to its long-grain. The bookcase can be made to stand on its end and works, in a pair, as fine ‘book ends’ either side of a a room’s centrepiece (such as a fireplace or entrance way), or can be mounted on elegant casters to become a moveable room divider.
The quality in this piece lies in the precision of its geometric form which requires great skill and attention when dealing with solid wood to keep all corners perfectly square and true and the edges crisp.
- The inlaid detailing can be crafted using a variety of different hardwoods, including solid American Maple (light, warm toned timber), or English steamed pear (with apricot tones).
- Strong, elegant casters can be added to create a moveable room divider.
